How to choose a knife?

How to choose a knife

Choosing a new knife can be easy, but for someone it can take hours of searching and deciding between hundreds to thousands of knives. Therefore, we will try to make it as easy as possible for you and help you to choose a proper knife perfect for you. I'm really sorry, but at the beginning a lot of people will be probably disappointed. The universal knife "for everything" does not exist. Yes, it is shocking and sad, but it's true. However, we have to look on the bright side, which refers to the new reason for buying another knife. You can settle your conscience, that you buy another knife when you already have over 100 of them at home.

Choose a knife according to purpose

This is the very first and the most important question you should ask yourself when choosing a new knife. What will I use it for? Or, what will the person I'm going to give it use it for? Is it supposed to be a knife for a hunter? For carving? On mushrooms? For chopping? For daily use? To the kitchen? For surviving? For throwing? For defense? .....? Or you just want it because you like it and you don't have one yet.

Choose a knife according to price

The price is also important parameter when choosing a new knife, so you can always define a price range in the filter. The price of a knife, of course, affects other factors that are important. Blade material, handle material, quality, brand and many more. It means that if you want e.g. a high-grade steel knife with a mammoth tusk handle, you have to consider the fact that it will cost x times more than a 420-point knife with a plastic handle. Simply put, even with knives, you pay for the quality.

Folding knife? Or rather a knife with a fixed blade?

This question can be answered by the first question - what will I use it for? If you want to use a knife e.g. for chopping or throwing, do not look for the folding knife. On the contrary, if you want to take a knife with you around the city and especially so that no one can see it, do not buy a knife like Rambo. However, this choice is not always so clear. For example, in case of a hunter, a fixed blade knife may be suitable for animal meat processing because of safer and more comfortable grip. If necessary, something can be cut easily and at the same time it will be easier to clean. However, on the other hand, the folding hunting knife has a saw on the bones or a ejector knife, which will make a lot of work much easier, but there will definitely not be such a comfortable grip and cleaning this folding knife after work is not easy.

Blade material

440C, N690, X50CrMoV15, CPM-S30V, 1095, M390... no idea? There are number of cutlery steels and to know them sufficiently is not so easy. Therefore, we deal with this topic in a separate article. However, steels can be divided into two basic groups - stainless and carbon. It cannot be said that stainless steel is better than carbon, or vice versa. Both of these types of steel have their pros and cons. We do not want to confuse you, therefore, we will mention just a few fundamental differences. Stainless steel has a much higher corrosion resistance, which means minimal care for the knife in comparison to a knife with carbon brushes, which you must dry after every use and ideally grease if you want to avoid the patina or rust. On the other hand, carbon steels are supposed to be be harder, but also easier to grind, with better cutting properties. Like we already said, this is just the most basic division. Handle material

Producers offer a number of handle materials and it depends only on you and your preferences, which one you choose. Whether for centuries used different types of wood, antlers, or modern materials such as G10, micarta, titanium and many others. It is really difficult to advise what is better or worse for you. For example, a handle with antlers means a nice aesthetic element for some people. However, for someone it can mean a handle that slides when working with animal meat which is not very practical. Contrariwise, G10 can be boring and ordinary for someone, but on the other hand, it is a very stable and durable material.
